Crafted as you would any other nice piece of furniture, but there's no hiding your love with this one. With workable buttons, this is an awesome way to bring the house together nicely. M Rated games, Kiddie Nintendo, and Bayonetta 2 thoughts
By : Cain Karl
I just discovered that there are people still upset about Bayonetta 2 being on the Wii U.
This came as a surprise to me honestly. I assumed it was just a minor annoyance and would dispel after a while only to have it brought up again. I've always enjoyed a good conversation, as it's hard to do, I thought it would be more fun to do this myself and ask as many of these same questions and answer each one. I just figure I'll have a conversational debate. Do the best I can to think of as many thoughts to this topic.
I can't believe Bayonetta 2 is going to be on the Wii U. That's a terrible idea.
I don't see how. The game looks pretty good so far. I never really played the first one much so it's not really a big deal for me.
That isn't the point. The original game was on the 360 and PS3, if they respected the fans they would have made it available for those systems as well.
Well to be fair, most gamers have been spoiled in a good way by many third party games which came out for every console. Nintendo fans watched Final Fantasy and Mega Man which were specific to their systems go to the Playstation console. Exclusive games just happen as a company moves to where the money is. I have always thought of games as being art. Games need to occasionally do something new and different, or it just becomes commercialized art. People hated the look of the Wind Waker when it was first revealed, myself included. Now it's not just a classic, it's seen as one of the best in the series. A good game matters more than only trying to appease fans. There are gamers that don't like change, but I want to believe that most only want a good game regardless of what changes. If the new Skyrim was suddenly made to look like a cel shaded anime, but still had the same level of detail, people might be annoyed, but in the end I think as long as the game was just as much fun, it would be accepted.
Then why the Nintendo Wii U?
Why not?
Nintendo does kiddie games which is why Grand Theft Auto will never be on it. Bayonetta 2 is wasted on the system.
Nintendo paid them a ton of money to get exclusive games. Wonderful 101 was made because of that and we are better for it.
They shouldn't have done that.
Not make Wonderful 101? Not take money?
They shouldn't have screwed over the fans by only having it on the Wii U.
Again, this is a contract. They said in an interview that the game would never have been made at all unless someone had paid for it. Nintendo stepped up. Isn't it better to get a game you want, then not to get one at all?
No, they should have put in a clause that it wouldn't be an exclusive game.
That makes no sense. I'm not talking fans, I'm talking straight up cash. If they refused the money, they would not be in business for long. Why do you think Pepsi isn't available at the local McDonalds? Contracts and money. That's just business.
Just stupid it's on a kiddie system.
I never understood that concept, video games ARE for kids. They are toys. Therefore it's all kiddie. Heck I think M rated games are geared towards kids more than adults anyway as the coolest kid is the one that gets to play those games, yet as an adult it isn't normally discussed around the water cooler as often as the scores for the the football game and the hot new person in accounting.
It isn't kiddie, you play them.
Yes. I do. I also enjoy cartoons and super hero movies as well as cooking and the stock market.
So you are an adult that plays them.
Yes, I also think I have a stuffed Yoshi doll and an Optimus Prime action figure. Those are toys as well.
My point being that you don't normally play with toys. They are defined as something children exclusively play with. Games have had to do a lot over the years to establish itself as a hardcore market. Nintendo constantly puts out Mario and Zelda games which are primarily towards kids, and the Wii was like a baby toy you swung around like a rattle. The xbox systems and the Sony systems are made for everyone but geared towards adults. The original xbox controller was supposed to be for a man's adults sized hands. The playstation is even designed to be more like a computer or an entertainment center that can do everything. They are different, they are an electronic entertainment device, not a toy.
Technically toys are also defined as amusements and past times. Sure you can have play with toys or video games as a job, but it is generally not your profession, even making a game is programming or art, playing the game is for testers. For most people, gaming is the past time you do after work or school for kids, when you have the free time to play it. On a second thought, I never cared for the term 'Electronic Entertainment Device". I like to think of Video Games as art.
Well. . .yeah, video games are art. That's my point.
Well art is hard to define, plenty of people don't see it as art regardless of how we perceive it. However I feel that almost any form of creative expression is art. Sometimes that means people don't like it right off the bat, or it doesn't sell as well. If all you do is churn out a cut and paste game, or constant sequels, then it feels more like you are making it for profit, which I think of more as entertainment than art. Oh entertainment CAN be art, but think of the game where they only add a few upgrades, polish a graphic here and there and then throw it out to make money. That's why I call them toys, I want to believe that the majority of them are refined to make something beautiful and creative. Looking deeper at a console, or at a game that is art, and you'll find all sorts of interesting stylized bits here and there. So, I feel games are toys, and if they are toys, then their primary target should be children, which it sorta is. When that is forgotten, you lose something. It's why the media constantly freaks out when an adult styled game comes out for it. It's like having an ICP song made for the Teddy Ruxpin doll BY the company. Adults would love that, and kids would find that hilarious, but it would freak the media out as it's a toy.
What's Teddy Ruxpin?
. . .never mind, I'm old. Anyway, toys are everywhere, They are amusement, a pastime, playing baseball, kicking a can in the street, playing with a cardboard tube or a board game. Most sports are built off of toys, I think it's pretty neat to be paid to play a game. But it had to start out as a kid just having fun in they're free time. Having fun. Once you forget the kids, you risk losing your primary market. Kids may not attend the super bowl, but they play the game, they have their heroes, and grow up watching it. When you make something for kids, but allow access to adults, you do stuff like Lego does, making full motion pictures and games, yet still keeping it for kids to enjoy, but so adults can appreciate it as well. I respect G rated films that do that like Toy Story 3. Sony and Microsoft suddenly added motion play, not the greatest idea, but why? To get others to play, because more people go to the theaters, buy cel phones, and play on mobile devices like the DS systems. That and to get another 2 years life out of their systems.
I don't agree with you. The systems should focus on M rated games as the industry is run by mature games nowadays. Grand Theft Auto V was the best selling game of the year, and Call of Duty is always a big seller. Nintendo will always have its place as a kid based system, but it should only get mature games third party or remakes/ remastered games. Putting a hardcore or mature franchise exclusively on any Nintendo system is doomed to fail as the fans won't buy it.
I sorta disagree with that. It is true that many series did not sell as well as they had hoped on the Nintendo, yet I hear people saying how Nintendo needs to 'step up' and stop pushing kid games. Yet when they do, people get upset or say 'why bother'? At the end of the day, you want to focus on games like Tetris, a game for everyone rather than a game for one kind of person. In essence, I'm fine with mature games, there should always be a place for them in the industry. However I see old Grand Theft Auto games that sit around forever in my shop, and yet I can't keep Spyro, or Crash Bandicoot longer than a day or two. We want to buy the games we played as kids, and we want to see those games come back. Skylanders is HUGE, and I've never played it, probably never will. I don't really play Pokemon any more either. Yet both are CRAZY best selling, Skylanders is already over 1.5 billion dollar industry and growing as long as Activision doesn't screw it up like they did Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero. . . Listen, I could be wrong, the numbers show that M rated games tend to run the industry, and that M rated games sell poorly on Nintendo consoles, however I don't see a problem with trying to do a little more and spending a little money to get there.
Just saying. . .
Throw me your thoughts in the comments.
Top 11 Most Expensive Playstation 1 Games
By : Cain Karl
1994 was a different time. No way to take a selfie, pagers were instead what people carried with them rather than a cel phone and saber toothed tigers hunted the villages for prey. Forrest Gump, Lion King and The Mask dominated the silver screen while Snoop Dog controlled the airwaves, the tv land was filled with The X-files and Star Trek Deep Space Nine.
It was also the year the Playstation debuted on the market, and it surprised the industry as being the little engine that could. Beating out several other machines that were vying for the top spot including the 3DO, the Sega Saturn, the Phillips cdi and the Atari Jaguar.
It was started many game series such as Resident Evil, Spyro and Crash, while revitalizing others, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Lunar. But in those years when it was out, what games set it apart? What were the titles that became the rarest and most expensive titles? Let's find out shall we, as we explore. . .
THE TOP ELEVEN MOST EXPENSIVE PLAYSTATION 1 GAMES!
11. Herc's Adventures
Released: July 31 1997
Developer: Big Ape Productions
Publisher: LucasArts
A long time ago in a Galaxy far far away, Lucas Games was a bastion of interesting silly and fun ideas. This was before they just popped out star wars babies over and over. I still miss the days of Loom, Maniac Mansion, the Dig, Monkey Island, I could go on. . .
Herc's Adventures was one of those fun silly titles by them. In the same vein as Zombies Ate my Neighbors, it was a top-down shooting adventure game. Two players could go at the same time, choosing Hercules, Jason, or Atlanta each with their own skill set and brand of fighting. Most of the time you would run around wasting things and gaining power-ups while doing errands for the gods, then you ended up fighting all over the place, taking on the Hydra, Medusa, Space Aliens, absolutly crazy and silly. It had a unique brand of humor and to top it all off, the character 'Herc' was voiced by Dan Castellaneta of Simpson's fame. So much fun and virtually unknown as it was overshadowed by the Disney cartoon shortly afterwards.
The game itself was pretty nice, but it sold poorly even with it being released on both the Playstation and the Sega Saturn. Good luck finding this gem.

Tales had it's start on the Super Famicom in Japan where is amazingly fit an entire pop song on the cart. It has been immensely popular in Japan, yet had a slow start in America. You played as a young 19 year old stowaway on an airship which is suddenly attacked. Finding a sword to defend himself, he is shocked to find the sword talks (standard RPG fodder) and escaped the ship with it, beginning a his journey.
It sold quite well in Japan and had high ratings in america due to the action oriented combat system which allowed you to pick and choose attacks and combo your opponents for extra points.

9. Persona 2
Release Date: November 30th 2000
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
The Shin Megami Tensei series was a highly popular role playing game for the Super famicom in Japan. It gained a sequel on the same system, finding it's niche quickly. As the popularity spread, so too did the ideas of the developers. As new systems became available, they would branch off and attempt new and different ideas, still with the mindset of the original, but under a new name and a new concept.
After the first Person, there was two games released after. Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. Innocent Sin never made it stateside, but Eternal Punishment did. A female reporter investigating brutal deaths at the hands of a mysterious figure called, 'Joker' who is rumored to grant wishes. She and two others are attacked, with the Jester-like antagonist threatening them, telling them they did something terrible to him in their past.
It sold a decent amount, for atlus, in Japan and got better rating, being a more pure release than the predecessor.

8. Mega Man Legends 2
Release Date: October 2000
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
The Mega Man series has always been quite popular as has the Capcom brand. When Mega Man 8 was released on the Saturn, Capcom needed a system that could sell more than a few copies in America. The PlayStation was that answer, yet at the time, Sony had a clause making certain that only 3D games would be allowed on their platform (or some such nonsense, discworld predated it and it was 2d.). But Sony was no fool. They knew how important the mega man brand and capcom itself, so the brokered a deal. They would allow mega man, if sony made an exclusive 3d style mega man for the PlayStation system. The creator of Mega Man stated it was his favorite work.

The second game was far more polished. A deeper storyline, real villains, and better gameplay set this game up to be a true masterpiece. The only problem, it ended on a cliffhanger! One assumes that since he was able to make a sequel, he felt that sony and capcom would keep the money flowing and he'd be able to continue his work. Ah such young dreams. We almost got the sequel on the 3DS, but it never happened.

You know, at first glance, I though it was a Disney thing. The dogs and the puppies that play basketball and save Christmas and do all that weird stuff that dogs apparently do. Imagine my surprise to find that it's a crazy tactical shooter game. It already has a huge fanbase and is loads of fun. So few copies were released and ever sold, it has become very hard to find a copy anywhere nowadays. Think of a game that combines Rayman, Worms and Conker's Bad Fur Day and you get a sense of just how great this game is. A real time strategy multiplayer mayhem game. Take a look at it below

6. Valkyrie Profile
Released: August 2000
Developer: TriAce
Publisher: Enix
We Americans are awfully picky. Something is a worldwide success selling millions around the globe, and we barely take notice, buying only about 73,000. To put that in perspective, Superman 64 was released one year earlier and sold 330,000 copies in america. Yike.
The game started of quietly enough. An impoverished village and two friends attempt to escape before being sold in slavery, the 14 year old girl Plantina breathes in the toxic air and dies in her friends arms. We suddenly jump to Asgard with Valkyrie being tasked by Odin and Freya to gain a weapon for a war. Just from that you can tell this is an action packed heart jerking game. Plus it's made my the Enix corporation so you know its good.

You're going to find Atlus at the top spot of rare titles usually. They grabbed the best games, but tended to only release enough games to make a profit. Long as they sold the right amount, they would break even and do lunch. So this game is a tactical role playing game using a grid system with multiplayer support. You start off as Zemeckis, a commander with the Kingdom of Almekia. So there are these guys called 'Rune Knights', pretty powerful people and one comes by to talk to him called Cador who is also a 'death knight' and accuses Zemeckis of treason. Well upset that he was falsely judged, Zemeckis decides to at least get in trouble for what he was accused of and rebel's against the King of Alkekia. Simple enogh of course, but if you know tactical RPG's and Atlus there is more to this then you think.

3. Suikoden 2
Released: September 2000
Developer: Psygnosos Camden Studio
Publisher: Midway
Yoshitaka Murayama was the lead on the Suikoden series since its inception and pulled many different ideas to create his series. He was inspired final fantasy and by a line of code in Enix's 1992 RPG Dragon Quest V, as well as the series as a whole. In DQV, each time the gamer loses and dies, the dialog from the priest upon being brought back to life is slowed down a little. Murayama liked the idea that in a good game, the little details are what matters most. He felt that the main character drove the plot, but that the secondary characters set the tone. It would help give his games a greater sense of realism and emotional depth. Great care was taken to figure out each level curve of each character, in order to keep you from using the same character over and over again, to mix it up and switch people out, and hopefully invoke some different feelings as well. One such instance was having to use a character that you don't like, only to have them die making you feel guilty. At least that was the hope.
The Suikoden series is one of Konami's hidden gems that is currently on some long hiatus, it's last game being for the DS I think (correct me if I'm wrong of course) and despite being an amazing amazing game with very high reviews and fantastic graphics, it saw a limited print in america and didn't sell well. Thus it's price has only increased.

It was a cute marketing attempt to boost sales for the game. I'd tell you more but I never got around to playing much of it. Still want too one of these days, I'll do a review. Developer: Psygnosos Camden Studio

So the Elemental Gear Bolt game, if you search for it now, is like a 10 to 20 dollar game. I won't bore you with the semantics, but it was a good game and is easy to get. However this:
. . .is not.
THIS is the hardest item on the market to find for the Playstation 1 as it was only given out as a contest by Working Designs'. It featured the steel case, a gold guncon, and a gold memory card. These Assassin Cases are among the most rare and prized collectibles from the PlayStation era.

Top ten games that need a remake under 16 bits
By : Cain KarlYou know how it is, there's that one game, you see it and, AH! YEAH! I remember that game! It was SO much fun! Why don't they do that anymore? There's some great properties in the past, and seeing as how games are becoming more and more samey, it might be nice to put some of that and redo it for the future.
So many games are getting the revamp treatment, for good or bad, we'll come to that later. In a long list of older games, there are a good deal that I think would be great to revisit. Here are the top ten games that need a revival.
10.Phantasy Star
Yes, I know there is a Phantasy Star Universe game. It's great, sure yeah, but I miss the great role playing game it used to be. Sega needed a win on their Master System. Nintendo had Dragon Quest, widely popular, Sega turned to a fledgling game designer, Yuji Naka who would go on to be the lead designer of the Sonic series. Using basic algorithms (tech word for magic) they made 3D dungeons and an expansive world. The stories and the games themselves were fantastic, excluding the third one.
The main star was Alis Landale, a 15 year old woman who was tasked with saving the world. She was the original star of the series and is still spoken of in legend in teh Phantasy Star world, pushing the heroes forward in the second game, and having followed by another female hero, Alys Brangwin in the fourth game. The games are still considered some of the best role playing games ever made.
Good old jRPG's still exist here and there. Would it really hurt Sega's bottom line to release one offline RPG? Will I have to ask the same of Dragon Quest five years from now since the have now released their series as an MMO?
Closest next gen game: Skies of Arcadia - Dreamcast, Gamecube
9.Battletoads
Is that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Not even close. With the three badical (it was a word in the eighties) toads and an overly judgmental professor, this group would smash and bash their way through an entire world meant to destroy them. They sold well, but couldn't get the momentum going for the series at the time. This with the animated pilot (it was pretty terrible), the marketing and some very fantastic villains We all loved the Dark Queen.
Pushing the boundaries of the NES console was one of the big purposes of this game. With everyone moving to the bigger consoles, Rare tried to push the NES to it's very limits, as well as our sanity. Seriously, I could barely get past the third level! Gamers are clawing at games that kick our tails and make us work for a victory. Push the limits of the Xbox One, make this game the hardest thing we've played and show us our awesome toads in action again RARE!
Closest next gen game: Dark Souls - PS3, 360
8.Tecmo Super Bowl
People tell me that I'm just not a sports game guy. So not true. Mutant League, NFL Blitz, Bases Loaded, I enjoy sports games that are a bit more frantic and fun. Never one for realism. Unless it's done right. Take Tecmo's Super Bowl series. Oh how many many people love this game. The old NES classic has one heck of a cult following and is one of the few football titles to gain in value even 20 years after it was released! They kept it going with SNES titles 1,2, and 3, then disappeared for a while. If you played it, you understand why people love it so much and STILL go back to it even with all the new titles available. It was tight, it was fun, it actually gave you a sense of accomplishment when you scored, it was good fun and used the real rosters, being one of the first to do so. I would love to see Tecmo retool this game and spend some serious cash, and make a brand new 2014 tecmo bowl. After Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, it would not be that hard to do. Just do it well, unlike that weird Rygar game. They would rake in SO much dough.
Closest next gen game: Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff and Throwback - DS, Xbox live
7.Actraiser
Quick! What would you say to a game that acted like civilization, yet you talked to the people as if you were their patron deity? Enix broke ground like crazy back in the day. The SNES was its palette or choice and it made some impressive art. The music was fantastic, the switch out between the genre's was well done. This was a crazy new game.
This is the best way to describe it. Imagine that this remake, had the same graphics as say, the newest Simcity or Civilization. You would fly your little messenger around to point the people in the right direction. During which you would attack monsters flying the skies until the people on the ground could ward them off. Then you send down the big guns and it turns into a god of war style action game as you defeat the boss monsters to unlock new lands. The second game did away with the civilization stuff which took away the point of the game. To see the original remastered with some next gen graphics? That would be so awesome to see make a comeback.
Closest next gen game: Nothing I can find
6.Smash TV
Like the predecessor Robotron 2084, this was a run and gun game. Yet this one has some serious style. A two player game show where you killed and survived as long as possible to collect fabulous prizes from a snarky announcer. If you want to know what to expect, watch the Schwarzenegger classic, The Running Man. The game was frantic, silly and fun and seemingly endless. This game would be amazing to see redone in a third person style with a friend with all the crazy armaments and more available.

5.Saturday Night Slam Masters
Anyone that has played this will tell you tales of wins and losses. The insane mash up and frantic fun of this game was beyond understanding, you just have to play it. Most wrestling games rely on button mashing and can be a bit slow. This was the craziest game to play on the SNES. You wrestled and fought like a brawling game. With tons of crazy original and unique wrestlers and multiplayer action, this combined wrestling with street fighter style moves. Once you started it was just crazy fun rocking in that ring. The character designs were even made by the artist and writer of the Fist of the North Star series just to add a bit of hulking muscular depth to the fun.
I could see this being remade with character creator, using the same art style and an intense eight player showdowns with online multiplayer ability. Am I dreaming? I hope not. Come on Capcom! Ducktales happened! This needs to be made!
Closest Next Gen Game: Fire Pro Wrestling Returns - PS2
4. Star Tropics
While I can question the bizarre storyline and the questionable ending, the fun Zelda themed game was made exclusively for america by Nintendo. Perhaps that is why we haven't seen ANY sort of development in this game. It's a strange and silly game that's highly addictive.
You played as a boy, Mike Jones, who finds his Uncle missing and follows clues to track him down. It was a great exploration game that even had a clue you could only learn by having the game brand new. You had to dip the letter that was in the box, in water, thereby revealing the secret code needed to continue. Wild right? There are a lot of people now who know the thrill of realizing that the letter in the box was more than just a neat bit for the game, but actually made you feel like you were part of it.
With a sequel, this game series was fun and enjoyable, Mike Jones needs to make his way to the current gen sometime soon. There is a good fanbase trying to make a third game, and several game studios like camelot (golden sun) and retro (metroid prime, new donkey kong country) have expressed interest in making a third installment. Let's get to it!
Closest Next Gen Game: The Zelda series
3.Dungeons and Dragons Arcade
I refer to the Capcom Arcade games, not the strange first person ones. I could never get into the Bard's Tale or games like it, but the arcade version with the various characters was SUPER fun. I played it and it's sequel anytime I had the chance to play with friends at the Space Station in town. A brawler with RPG elements? add the ability to grow and change to ANY game and you want to play and get further. Add your friends and it's a Friday night party!
The closest we got to a full release was a Sega Saturn Import. Now they did make an HD version of it for download, but come on. With the graphics on the new street fighter, you could easily make this game. Not only that, but with downloadable levels, characters and such, you'd make a killing! Online play that D and D game people!
Closest Next Gen Game: Dragon's Crown
2.Street of Rage
Sega. I'm looking at you. Capcom has it's own issues with Final Fight, but Streets of Rage you have had so so so many opportunities. I'll give you that you can't make Shenmue as you have lost all of the Sonic Team and to be fair, the game series is slow to start and most people don't have that kind of attention span, and it cost too much to make. . .what was I talking about? Streets of Rage! yes! This game was EVERYWHERE and was even the corner stone of your failed action circle thing that was supposed to promote movement in games. It will make you so much money, just get on it and let us beat up crime and rock it with Adam, Axel and of course Blaze.
Closest Next Gen Game: the downloadable Double Dragon from Way Forward.
1. River City Ransom
Closest Next Gen Game: Diablo 3
Well that's all I got for you today. Think fondly on the possibilities, I just know that some things are better left to the past. What games have had great remakes and terrible remakes? We'll find out next time.
Later Gamers!
Wow. Smash brothers rocks at fan service
By : Cain Karl
So Sakurai posted a picture on the Miiverse recently with a picture from the upcoming Smash Brothers game for the 3DS.
That is truly awesome. I have to wonder just how much they'll put into this game. Come on people, you dang well better know who that is! You fight them constantly just to get a cool looking hat!

Cyber Bigfoot Showdown!
By : Cain KarlYou know, there is a part of me that weeps for modern film making. The days of character development are no more. Gone are the days where long scenes and deep emotions are conveyed so that the plot can create a wonderful tension and understanding between the audience and the film itself. Just slam bam explosives and action films.
Things is, I know what I like. And crazy stuff like this is just what I want. Cyborg Robot Bigfoot. You wouldn't think to google those exact words and get much. Well get this! I don't even know what the plot is, I don't care! Cyborg Bigfoot! So so down with the craze.
It is the sort of thing I don't think Hollywood is capable of really doing anymore. If Aliens vs Cowboys had been done by troma, well then we would have giggled and enjoyed its absurdity. But when they spend millions on it and try to make it believable, I dunno, it gets weird. If a 200 million dollar film was made about cyborg bigfoot, would it still be a fun film to see? I think it'll be better indie film style. Check out the site below and enjoy the FOOT!

Make Games! With. . Windows 8. . .
By : Cain KarlOK, little joke, but to be fair when you type 'Windows 8' in a search engine you get a lot of jokes that pop up in google images.
So yeah, there is a place called project spark that will let you make game for the new Xbox One, as long as you have the current version of Windows 8 on your computer.
Ug. . .
Last year XBLA was the toast of the town, then in a year or two, it became a hassle, and now is non existent. Even Minecraft had to jump through hoops to get it up with them wanting the developer to sign on with a publisher, rather than produce it themselves. MINECRAFT! IT's why the Oddworld series is skipping the console and Final Fantasy online as well.
So I'm a bit hesitant. However if you are an indie developer, check it out and get back to me. I got some money I want to invest in your games. ^_^

The new Batman is. . .Bane?
By : Cain Karl![]() |
| . . .on in the hearts of young people everywhere. Rock.. . .on? |
So some quick news. Bane will be wearing the Batman suit. I'm not really sure what to think about that. The idea behind it is sound, Bane hates batman, so in order to defeat it, he must become what he hates. Interesting right?
Except there is a war for Gotham and I guess Batman isn't there. I don't follow comics much. Anyone know what the heck is going on in the 52 universe now?
Well maybe the animated features will clear it all up.
Check out the story for yourself,

Top 9 geeky shows still in first season to check out
By : Cain Karl![]() |
| Na na na na na na na na Alfred! |
Grimm, Castle, Arrow, One Piece, I talk a lot about TV shows I like. It can be hard to get into a show that is already several seasons in. I prefer to get into shows on the ground floor, although watching three seasons of Castle in two weeks was a lot of fun and got me caught up to enjoy the ongoing fourth season. It can be overwhelming to many people including myself when a show has three or more seasons. You miss so much, how are you supposed to watch it all? Not everyone enjoys that. It's nice sometimes to get into a show from the first season.
There is a lot to choose from and a lot of hidden gems. Geeky culture is starting to become more profitable, that can be both a good and a bad thing, but for now, here is my geeky picks of shows that are still only in their first season to check out while you still have the chance.
9. Xiaolin Chronicles
Ok, this one is a bit of a cheat, its based off of an old Cartoon that aired years ago on WB called Xiaolin Showdown. Go watch it on Hulu. It's odd and slow at times, but the writer and director, Christy Hui is building a world and making the characters more diverse. When it fell apart after season three, there was so much more to tell. Now years later she is starting it up again on Canadian television. It's silly fun that mixes western and eastern animation and story and with only a few episodes in, it's worth checking out before it goes crazy. Gong Yi Tan Pai!
8. Steven Universe
No not the Steven Hawkings Universe, but that is still awesome. This is a brand new Cartoon Network show.
It sucks being the youngest trying to find your place in the family business. It's even harder when the three older female siblings are protectors of the world with fantastic powers, and poor Steven can't figure out how to use his gem to help. He tries to make breakfast, be supportive and help out however he can anyway, making more trouble than he meant too, but also at other times coming through and saving the day. I really enjoyed the diversity of the cast, and that they are always kind and supportive of Steven despite his getting into trouble. If you liked Adventure Time, this is a sweet show to watch.
7. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
The original Once Upon a Time show is in it's third and I think it's final season. The storybook characters of Disney fairy tales living in the real world, never knowing who they were until the curse was lifted. Despite the feeling that they had no idea where they were going during the second season, it's great fun to enjoy.
During the appearance of the mad hatter, they gave a tiny glimpse into the world of wonderland. Only hinting here and there, but never really exploring it. To be fair, there is a lot of ground the writers could cover with many other Disney tales. Well now they plan on exploring it with Alice. Sure we've heard this story, and you may be tired of Alice getting a new treatment time and time again, but watching Alice take down eight burly guards by herself while dealing with not only the Queen of Hearts, but Jafar from Aladdin as well? All while trying to rescue her true love, the Genie in the bottle? It's actually pretty interesting and worth a look.
6. Crazy Ones
Robin Williams. You love him or you hate him. The TV show is being spearheaded by the same group that did Ally McBeal and you can see it in it's zany writing. 'The Crazy One's' is a clever dual reference to not only the crazy people working at the Ad agency in the show, but also to the famous commerical by Apple and Steve Jobs. It's a fun and silly pleasure to watch the oddness unfold and the strange characters that show up as guest stars.
Plus it's Robin Williams on TV which the last time was Mork and Mindy. That was ok right? I never saw it. Tell me if I'm right.
5. Beware the Batman
Despite the fact that I'm a bigger Spider-man fan, I will always enjoy a good Batman story. For those of you who know about the show, we all made fun of the aesthetics and the strange characters. The weird CGI, the fact that batman was missing the top half of his head, and Alfred wielding guns?

| Do kids even know Wind and the Willows references? |
They cut out all the major characters and instead bring in B listers and unknowns into the fray. What happens is it makes Batman more interesting.
The animation is tight, the stories are fun and enjoyable, and Batman needs an image change now and then. It's on hiatus until January so watch it now before it gets three seasons like Brave and the Bold.
4. Almost Human
Karl Urban is usually in the coolest films, or at least my favorite characters in them. Bones in Star Trek, Black Hat in Priest, Judge Dredd, he's pretty awesome. Now he plays a detective in the future named, John Kennex, a generally grumpy guy with a distrust in androids, who is paired with Dorian, an Android that was decommissioned for having human emotions. It's a standard buddy cop set in the future.
It's the same sort of story we have heard before, the latest episode last week was pretty much Diehard, and the writers knew it. The show just clicks and becomes fun and enjoyable. Check it out tonight just for fun and see what you think.
3. Gravity Falls
A brother and sister are sent away to Gravity Falls, a sleepy little town to stay with their Great Uncle Stan, or Grunkle Stan for short. While there the brother, Dipper Pines, runs across a mysterious book, warning whoever reads the book that strange and terrifying creatures exist and make Gravity Falls their home. With his sister Mabel amd Soos the loveable Man Child Janitor, they'll deal with ghosts, dinosaurs, zombies and living video game characters as they try to enjoy their summer.

| Smile Dip. So many good memories. . . |
The shear joy I got from this show is beyond explanation. It is well written, enjoyable, and teases kids and adults to see the hidden parts here and there. With a huge fan base and one HECK of a season finale, this is defiantly one you should be checking out as soon as you can. The second season will be coming and there is an extra DVD with several short episodes to tide us over until then.
2. Agents of Shield
Marvel films have come out of nowhere to become huge box office smashes. When Marvel was bought by Disney, we all feared the worse. However, instead, they were given more tools and resources to expand outside of the comics. Now there is an animated universe, and a TV show that expands the film series Marvel universe as well.
Slow to start, but so was Buffy and Firefly. Joss drags things out with his stories, but the payoff does come as you begin to care for each character and watch as they surprise you. Even with Whedon's hands tied (he can't use the word 'mutant' and there is a short short list of characters he is even allowed to bring on the show) he's been doing a decent job with it. Don't wait to check it out when it's in its fifth season and Malcolm Renolds becomes a guest star.
Melinda May is the best. She will END you. :D
1. Sleepy Hollow
We should be able to play with our classics. Everyone else does. Japan has simple people in the past turned into super heroes, as does Europe. So let's enjoy a good old tale retold for enjoyment.
This is Fox's version of Supernatural. A young female cop and a two hundred year old brit fighting spooks and monsters while trying to prevent the apocalypse from happening. A fantastic cast with fun chemistry. Ichabod Crane was a revolutionary soldier who was injured fighting a demon of a man whose head he cut off. He wakes up in the present day to find that the man he was meant to kill has also survived, the headless horseman, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. Lt. Grace Abigail "Abbie" Mills is a detective on the force in the town of Sleepy Hollow who now works with him as they are destined to confront and defeat the evil which is trying to destroy the world, as well as the newly risen evil terrorizing people.

| Seems to be a trend going of taking an abrasive yet handsome brit and paring them with an american woman. |
The amount of detail into Ichabod is wonderful, fixing stereotypes and using real world history. They had an episode where a boy was transported from the 1400's, and he spoke middle english! Watch it for the monsters and mayhem, stay for the history lessons. This is a fun and crazy show that has only just begun!
Ones I am still evaluating:
Atlantis: Replacing Merlin as a fantasy old time story. Already renewed for a second season so I gotta get on it quick while there are only 13 episodes.
The Blacklist: An FBI most wanted fugitive gives himself up so he can work with them to find the worst global criminals the FBI has no knowledge of. It might just be a CSI style show but I've been told it is pretty fun so we'll see if it is worth my time.
Ones that failed to impress me:
Dracula: Boring boring boring. You can tell me about how that time period was til the cows come home, it doesn't make it any easier to watch.
